Threads is testing a virtual-gem system that may recognise posts with strong engagement, although Meta has not said whether the gems will carry any monetary value.
App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi spotted the feature in Threads’ back-end code and shared a screenshot of a ‘post recognition’ screen. It tells a user they have earned a gem for a recent post and encourages them to collect more. Threads has not announced the test, explained its eligibility rules or confirmed whether it will be released publicly.
How Threads’ virtual gems could work
The screenshot suggests gems would be awarded when a post reaches an engagement threshold. Meta has not said which metrics would count, how high the threshold would be or whether the gems could be converted into cash or other benefits. Based on the screenshot, the feature appears to be a visual reward intended to encourage more posting and interaction.
The test follows an earlier attempt to pay creators for activity on Threads. In 2024, Meta ran a limited, invitation-only bonus programme that rewarded selected creators according to the number and performance of their posts. There is no evidence that the new gems are connected to that programme, so creators should not treat the test as a new income stream yet.
Why Threads may be testing virtual rewards
A virtual reward could make posting feel more competitive and give users a reason to chase stronger engagement. For Threads, the system may help keep frequent posters active and encourage more conversation on the platform.
Its practical value will depend on where the gems appear, whether other users can see them and whether they affect distribution or earnings. Meta has not confirmed any of those details.
What the test means for creators and brands
For creators, there is nothing to act on yet beyond watching for an official announcement. Meta has not shared an eligibility threshold, rollout plan or regional availability, and the gems are not a confirmed source of income. Brands should also avoid treating them as a campaign metric or proof of creator performance unless Threads makes the rewards public and explains how they are awarded.
